There are a number of reasons why a property may need rewired.

It is recommended a property is rewired every 25 years, this is mainly due to the insulation of the cable wearing down. This can cause nuisance tripping of circuit breakers, or if the consumer unit is as old as the cabling it may not even trip which can cause fires.

The current installation has been poorly installed, incorrect cable sizes used. Lots of additions could mean inaccessible joint boxes which in the event of a fault could mean damage to walls, ceilings etc to repair or replace cable. This is the last thing you want if you've just redecorated.

If you have just bought a property and the wiring hasn't been touched in some time now is the perfect time to rewire, before any redecoration starts or new carpets go down. Be aware that some homes have new consumer units installed in order to pass regulations, a lot of the time these consumer units have been fitted to properties with wiring dating back to the 70s or even earlier. So while the property may meet regulations and pass an EICR on the day, the insulation on the cable could fail at a later date.

If there are no back boxes behind switches or sockets this would indicate a poorly installed or old electrical system and a visual inspection would be recommended
